How did you develop an interest in the German language, and what drew you to it?

Being born in Germany, I was immersed in the German language from an early age, making it an integral part of my identity. As my mother tongue, it has always fascinated me—not just as a means of communication, but as a gateway to culture, literature, and nuanced expression. This deep-rooted connection has allowed me to master the language fluently, and I am passionate about sharing this knowledge with others in a way that makes learning both engaging and effective.

What challenges did you face as a child learning German? How do your experiences help you as a trainer?

As a child, I occasionally found German grammar rules to be quite complex, especially in a school setting. However, over time and with experience, I developed a deeper understanding of these structures. Now, as a trainer, I can approach these challenges from a different perspective, making them more accessible and easier to grasp for learners. My own journey has given me valuable insights into the difficulties students may face, allowing me to explain concepts in a clear, structured, and engaging way.

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned throughout your experience as a trainer?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a trainer is the joy and fulfillment that comes from guiding children on their language-learning journey. Seeing their progress, their growing confidence, and their excitement when they master a new concept is incredibly rewarding. I never expected that teaching German could be so much fun, but each session reaffirms my passion for it.

Watching my students develop their skills and knowing that I play a part in their success has been truly inspiring and has shaped the way I approach teaching—with patience, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to making learning enjoyable.

How has your career in teaching German evolved over time?

Over time, my career in teaching German has evolved into a dynamic and enriching experience, especially when working with children. Their natural curiosity and eagerness to learn create an engaging and interactive environment that makes each lesson unique. I have had the privilege of guiding young learners at different levels—some who already have a strong foundation and others who are just beginning their journey.

This diversity has allowed me to refine my teaching approach, making lessons more adaptable, creative, and enjoyable for both my students and myself. Seeing their enthusiasm and progress continuously motivates me to enhance my methods and create an inspiring learning experience.

Which aspects of your education have been most helpful in teaching German?

I completed my Abitur in Germany. I didn’t really go through any other specific training steps to become a trainer. I watched other trainers at work and after a month I was allowed to start teaching children myself. I seem to be very good at it, because so far I have received a lot of positive feedback about my lessons.

What teaching methods do you prefer based on the results you’ve observed over time?

I completed my Abitur in Germany, which provided me with a strong academic foundation in the language. While I did not follow a traditional training path to become a German trainer, I gained invaluable experience by observing skilled trainers in action. This hands-on approach allowed me to quickly develop effective teaching techniques and build confidence in my abilities.

After just a month of training, I began teaching children myself, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback I have received since then has reinforced my passion and aptitude for this role. My ability to create engaging, interactive lessons and adapt to different learning styles has been key to my success as a trainer.

How do you make German lessons enjoyable for young learners?

I don’t just talk about the lessons with the children, but also try to have a little small talk from time to time if it fits in with the topic. It should give the children the feeling that it’s not a strict German lesson. In addition, the children are always allowed to express their wishes or needs and tell me if they don’t like something, so that the lessons are fun for everyone. I also always try to design and formulate tasks that are relevant to everyday life so that the children know exactly what they are talking about and can tell me more about themselves if they want to.

How do you personalize German lessons for each child?

I tailor each German lesson to the individual needs of my students by adapting materials and teaching methods to their learning styles and progress. In addition to structured assignments, I carefully select and design personalized exercises that reinforce key topics in an engaging way. When I notice a child struggling with a particular concept, I create customized help sheets to break it down into simpler, more digestible steps.

This approach ensures that every student receives the support they need while keeping lessons interactive and enjoyable. By continuously assessing their strengths and challenges, I can adjust my teaching strategies to maximize their learning potential.

What differences do you notice in the learning process between younger and older children?

So far, I have observed that both younger and older children approach learning with dedication and focus. However, their learning styles can vary. Younger children often benefit from playful, interactive methods, such as games, songs, and visual aids, which help them absorb new concepts more naturally. Older children, on the other hand, tend to engage more with structured explanations, logical patterns, and real-life applications of the language.

To respond to these differences, I adapt my teaching approach accordingly—using creative, hands-on activities for younger learners and more analytical, discussion-based techniques for older students. By recognizing and adjusting to these nuances, I ensure that each child remains motivated and engaged throughout their learning journey.

How do you manage a group with significant age differences?

So far, the children in my groups have had similar skill levels, so I haven’t needed to divide them based on ability. However, when there are age differences, I take a collaborative approach by pairing younger children with older ones during group activities. This not only allows the younger students to learn from their more experienced peers but also encourages the older children to reinforce their knowledge by explaining concepts in a simple and supportive way.

I create balanced activities that challenge each child at their own level while keeping the entire group engaged. For example, I might adapt tasks so that younger students focus on listening and speaking, while older ones work on reading and writing. This approach fosters teamwork, mutual respect, and a dynamic learning environment where every child benefits.

What advice do you have for parents who want to support their child’s German learning at home?

Parents can play a crucial role in supporting their child’s German learning at home by integrating the language into everyday activities in a fun and engaging way. Here are some practical tips:

  1. Encourage Conversation – Ask your child about their lessons and have them explain the topics in German. Even if you don’t speak the language, listening and showing interest will motivate them to express themselves.
  2. Support with Homework – Review their assignments together and encourage them to explain their thought process. This reinforces their understanding and builds confidence.
  3. Incorporate German into Daily Life – Label household items with German words, practice simple dialogues during meals, or play word association games to make learning feel natural.
  4. Use German Media – Expose your child to German-language books, cartoons, songs, or audiobooks. Watching familiar movies with German audio or subtitles can also improve comprehension in an enjoyable way.
  5. Play Interactive Games – Board games, language-learning apps, and flashcards can make vocabulary building fun and stress-free.

By making German a part of everyday experiences, parents can help their children develop fluency in a way that feels exciting and effortless.

How do you address the diverse learning styles of children?

While I haven’t had significant experience with highly diverse learning styles yet, I understand the importance of adapting my teaching methods to meet the needs of each child. In the future, I plan to implement various strategies to address different learning styles, such as:

  1. Visual Learners – Using flashcards, charts, videos, and other visual aids to reinforce vocabulary and grammar concepts.
  2. Auditory Learners – Incorporating songs, rhymes, and speaking exercises to help these students absorb language through listening.
  3. Kinesthetic Learners – Creating hands-on activities, games, and role-playing exercises that involve movement and active participation.
  4. Reading/Writing Learners – Providing worksheets, journaling activities, and structured written assignments to cater to those who learn best through reading and writing.

By observing how each child engages with different activities, I’ll be able to fine-tune my approach to best support their individual learning preferences.

How do you incorporate German culture into your lessons?

I believe that learning a language is not just about vocabulary and grammar—it’s also about immersing students in the culture that shapes it. In my lessons, I love sharing my personal experiences from Germany to provide context and make the language come to life. For example, if we’re discussing a specific cultural tradition, I take the opportunity to explain its significance, how it’s celebrated, and what makes it unique.

I also integrate cultural activities, such as introducing German holidays, traditional foods, or even popular music and films. By discussing German customs, festivals, and historical landmarks, students get a broader understanding of the language in its cultural context. This makes the learning experience more engaging and helps students connect on a deeper level with both the language and the culture behind it.

What expectations should parents have about their child’s progress?

Parents should understand that language learning is a gradual process, and each child progresses at their own pace. It’s important to avoid putting pressure on the child and instead trust the process, allowing them to enjoy learning without stress. Children will acquire fundamental language skills primarily through consistent communication in German during lessons, where they’ll gradually build their vocabulary, speaking, and listening abilities.

German grammar can be challenging, so it’s completely normal if children don’t grasp every rule immediately. Mastery comes over time, through repetition and practice, and the focus should be on progress rather than perfection. As long as children are engaged, patient, and motivated, their skills will develop steadily. Parents can help by supporting their child’s efforts and reinforcing learning in everyday situations, fostering a positive and supportive environment at home.

How do you adapt your teaching methods in response to advancements in educational technology?

In response to advancements in educational technology, I’ve integrated various digital tools and platforms to enhance the learning experience. I primarily use materials and tasks from a digital book, which allows me to provide interactive and engaging exercises tailored to the students’ needs. This platform is especially useful because it offers a wide range of relevant, real-world content that keeps lessons interesting and applicable to everyday situations.

I also make use of a built-in translator to clarify any unclear vocabulary or concepts, ensuring that students fully understand the material. Additionally, the platform’s homework tool is invaluable for assigning and tracking progress, allowing me to easily monitor each student’s development and provide personalized feedback. By combining these resources, I can create a more dynamic and effective learning environment that adapts to each student’s pace and enhances their overall understanding of the language.
